Imported casks of jute sacks were used for packaging the exports of peanuts, palm oil, and palm kernels. Hand knives and long matchets were marketed throughout Africa. The arrival of sewing machines enabled a new line of tailoring work to begin, and the arrival of bicycles made transportation easier. The changes in African technology during the colonial period, however, were not limited to the adoption of industrial technology, and they were not necessarily improvements. In Central Africa, agricultural technology underwent massive changes which left the population with an inferior diet.
Tsetse ﬂy and sleeping sickness prevented horses and cattle from living in large areas of the continent. A great epidemic of rinderpest or cattle plague swept across Africa from east to west in the 1890s, and drastically reduced the cattle population of the savanna. Smaller epidemics wiped out populations of chickens and pigs in some regions. Populations grew as well as declined. Towns and missions tended to attract population because of new types of employment, and the populations of towns tended to grow not only through immigration, but because health conditions were somewhat better there than in the countryside.
These yams were grown in mounds and produced large cylindrical tubers which could be boiled and eaten in chunks or pounded into a paste. For most of the equatorial forest, bananas and plantains were the main crop, while beans dominated in the highlands of Rwanda and Burundi. Two American crops, maize and manioc, 38 Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa 1880–1995 had come to be widely grown even before the colonial period, especially in wet savanna areas, and have spread further since then. The timing of the rains governed production of these major crops.
