17 The Cold War and the Six Day War 21 The US effort to head off war by appealing to Egypt to reverse course, endorsing UN diplomacy, restraining Israel, organizing the maritime operation, and seeking Soviet cooperation immediately encountered a series of problems. For starters, Israeli insecurity mounted quickly.
