Many allied health occupations require a period of practical training in a clinical setting, especially for those occupations that involve direct patient care and treatment. This training is often provided or required as part of an educational program, for example, in the form of an internship or residency. The basic idea is that by the time you get a "real" job, you will already have had plenty of practice. With administrative or technical positions, however, you're more apt to be testing out your skills on the job, under supervision, during a probationary period.
